Red Bull Uncharted - trailer

The trailer for the movie about Shane McConkey, Miles Daisher, and Chuck Berry jumping from unexplored peaks in New Zealand is available now on YouTube. We've talked about their BASE movie project before here and here.

Watch it in high definition here.

D3 BASE game

Jarno has come back from the USA, but left a couple days later to go to Empuriabrava for the Empuriaflock 2009. Starting monday, we will do a bit of a catch-up on all online video news from the past days.

In the meantime, I came across this video on YouTube that shows capture footage from the D3 BASE game (one Jarno also worked on in a modeling/advising role, see game credits). Looks pretty nice, even if I can't imagine the real jump from El Cap being that long?

WWWN DVD competition: The Winners

And finaly, here are the results in our Wingsuit Story competition!
We have selected three winners from the submissions, who will soon receive their highly anticipated FlyTheLine2 in the mail!
Congrats!

The first selected entry is this one:
My big wings
by Sebastian

My first flight with bigger wings became an outstanding experience. Before trying the new suit I played around with the smaller one until I was able to perform barrel rolls, front loops etc. Then after weeks of lousy weather I finally got the chance to fly my new suit. It was a two-way together with another guy wearing my old suit. Right after the exit I couldn’t stop smiling as the additional power I was feeling gave me so much more time and forward speed that I had to spend a lot of effort on slowing down in order to stay with the other guy who was taking pictures. All my concerns about handling the bigger wings and the opening phase went away pretty soon during that flight when I experienced the stability of the suit and the good accessibility of the hand-deploy when trying to reach it at high altitude. Flying these bigger wings was definitely another milestone in my amateur skydiving career and I can’t wait to get them in the air again.

Blue skies

From the Swiss contigent, we got this short story on ones exploration of the wingsuit dicipline.
Tales of a bird
by Christoph

So, I’m sitting here at the table in my livingroom, It’s midweek, the weather remains great, just watched a birdvideo where I found my name in the credits we’ve had a small wingsuit-event where we tried to gather as many birds possible and cram them into our plane.. since it’s a small county, only about 10 turned up. Well, that’s actually quite big already!
So, I’m still sitting here and try to think of something worthwhile for you to read; I look outside the window, the sun is setting, there are puffies shining bright orange, and all I can think about is, yea, you guessed it, the next fix, I’m dreaming of carving clouds, flocking with fellow birds, soaring cliffs some day..

What a journey this has been so far, just for the skydiving, going through AFF, getting a license, enjoying the jumps, the parties, the new friends! Then that chap turns up, swinging wildly with some nylon, As prodigy I am, I’m giving it a go. Then, I decide to wait for another couple jumps.. Then putting on another prodigy, and, its smoking asses!

Couple of flights later, I’ve already owned two suits, jumped another two, and am already thinking about future purchases. Wingsuit-flying is addictive. Nylon crack hits it quit precise. I keep on seeing warning labels on rigs, parachutes, even closing tools. I don’t remember seeing a warning label on any of the suits I’ve jumped in that regards…

So, I’m still sitting here, the puffies have turned dark red, and all I can think about…..

THE END

And last but not least, we got this entry from Sweden, highlighting the first wingsuit jump of the season. Check it out!

Airborn again!
by Ludwig

Last weekend the weather went flocking crazy. We had -3 degrees celsius at 4000m (13 000ft) and about a million degrees on the ground, zero wind and no clouds. This is pretty unusual in Sweden, Västerås, 4th of April. A couple of birds gathered, got dressed (some even undressed because of the temperature) and signed up for a jump.

It felt pretty nervous to be back in the air after four months on the ground but that just made it more exciting.

Four of us exited at the same time, none of us a good exit. We levelled and started flying. We flew like cornflakes the first 30 seconds but that didn't matter. My legwing flapped strangely so i took a look only to find Martin flying up under my legwing, laughing like a crazy man while headbutting it. We did a linked roll, flew home and landed safely...

It wasn't the best flight ever but we got to do our thing; we flocked again!

Hi-5!

Welcome to my secret volcano lair...

Russian extreme sports enthusiast Valery Rozov has flown his wingsuit into an active, but sadly not spewing liquid hot magma, volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.

Valery opened his parachute as he headed into the volcano, landing safely on a sheet of ice in the crater.

If you're a fan of Tim Emmett...

The media seems to be in love with Tim Emmett and his adventures these days. English paper 'The Inverness Courier' posted yet another interview with Tim Emmett.

We usually don't like to repeat ourselves this much, but hey, it's mass media and mentions wingsuiting in a positive light; the exposure's gotta be good for the sport right?

New bird footage

Klara from Belgium did a FFC with our own Alejandro Lopez. She did a great job and we welcome her to the flock. Watch the video of her second jump below. Alex was flying the camera.

Unfortunately the soundtrack Alex used has been removed by YouTube due to the usual copyright stuff. You can watch it on YouTube in high quality.

Jarno is at Z-Flock

Jarno, our most prolific blog-poster, is at Z-Flock and will be back home on the 22nd. Until that time, we won't be able to provide you with as much wingsuit news are you have gotten used to unfortunately.

Macca and I don't have as much spare moments during the day to post random YouTube videos and such. We'll still post mass-media articles and other stuff that gets sent to us, of course.

So, if you wanna help us out until the 22nd, let us know if you've posted a video or seen an article that could be of interest to others! Mail us at news@flylikebrick.com!

We'll also post the winner of the WWWN Story Competition when he gets back.

Cheers,

Costyn.

Sport Explorers - Jeb Corliss Wingsuit

Thomas Michael Tran removed his previous video we featured in Februari and uploaded a longer, better quality one. You can watch the interview with Jeb Corliss as he explains what wingsuiting is and how BASE jumps are made that much more interesting. There's also a bit where the presenter is seen "skydiving" with no chest strap; unnerving...

Antonov Boogie 2009 announced

It's a slow news day, Jarno is busy jumping instead of scouring YouTube, so I thought I'd post that the dates for the Antonov Boogie 2009 have been announced by the organization.

Unfortunately it looks like they haven't been able to get the AN-72 again this year, nor is it going to be held at Cochstedt Airport, which is too bad. It should still be a fun boogie with good vibes, great food, and an organization that works like well oiled clockwork.

The website has not been updated with the new information yet, so I'll post the contents of the news letter here:

Tim is 'Ronaldo of rock-climbing'

Well, since today is a slow news day, I thought I'd post yet another article about Tim Emmet and his rock-climbing, base jumping wingsuit exploits. This article actually has a bit of him explaining what wingsuit jumping is. I'm not sure what wingsuit he's flying that gets him to go 250mph, but I'd sure like to know... ;)

Boole blasts by...

French online mag Para Mag have just published a stunning picture of Phoenix Fly jumper James Boole, doing what he does best... eating stroopwafels and making babies Flying inches away from a rock face looking cool as a cucumber.

The suit appears to be a prototype that was flown during the last WoM event and not his usual tipple, the Vampire V3.

If you speak french, or want to see the image in all its glory, check out this link.

The Asgard Project

Well known British rock-climber, BASE and wingsuit jumper Leo Houlding, whom we've featured before, is going to climb a huge mile high rock in 2 weeks on Baffin island, in the far north of Canada. He's then going to wingsuit BASE off it... and then do it again!

Read the featured article here at Telegraph.co.uk. There's a video of his training for the event as well, featuring some BASE jumps (no wingsuit jumps unfortunately).

The film that will be made of the adventure will come out later this year. You can read about it on the project page of the production company. This page also has a bunch of amazing pictures of Mt. Asgard.

For the wingsuit nerds: GPS data in videos

A couple years ago I wrote a little program that would convert a GPS track to flight info such as forward speed, downward speed, altitude, heading, glide ratio, and such. I never really did anything with it, except use it in 2 videos: Flight over Empuria and a flight over Teuge, the Netherlands.

But now Guilliame Richard has incorporated my code into a program you can actually download and run on your computer! You can download the program (for different operating systems) here: GPX2SRT. It will convert a GPS track to a SRT subtitle file, which you can encode into your video with VirtualDub.

It still needs a bit of documentation, but it's not too hard to figure out.

Enjoy!

Skydive Summer 2008

Glen posted a nice compilation video on his YouTube account.
It features a few (short) wingsuit shots as well.

Check it out.

The Oliver Archive

Oliver posted a new video on his YouTube account today. A nice piece of 'archival footage' on Benedikts first flight, from way back in 2007 already.
Time flies!

Check it out!

Also worth checking out is this EXTREME flyby, made by a Porter Pilot, and a DZ which we shell not mention.
I think this is as close as you can get without getting scrapes and bruises, or eating tailwing.

Porter FlyBy

Oliver is keen on keeping us busy, as he also posted this nice BASE video.

And last, this short video he edited from the AN72 boogie (2007)
