You're my hero.... now in HD!

The tiny cameras made by Go Pro are awesome. Affordable, small, relatively good quality and can be easily hidden in the girls toilets at work mounted pretty much anywhere you want.

What could make it better? Well, in this modern day HD demanding world, er, HD.

The rumblings have been there for a while, and the world has been waiting with baited breath. Well fellow 'newsies', the wait is nearly over!

Go Pro have finally released some demo footage from the Go Pro HD Hero, and it looks pretty damn impressive.

The site mentions a fall release (Autumn for those of us not in the USA), so watch this space. As soon as we know about it, you'll know about.

Just because it's a cool little gadget, and of course because it includes lots of shots of wingsuiting, check out the HD promo video in the above YouTube clip, or in better quality on the GoPro website, here.

Columnist Tim Walker talks about the series Daredevils in his column. The episode featuring Jeb Corliss doing wingsuit proximity flying apparently puts Jeb in a bad light, coming across as an "insensitive git".

Daredevils - The Human Bird

A short preview for the 60 minute special on Jeb Corliss:
The incredible spectacle of proximity wingsuit flying involves wearing a state-of-the-art Teflon winged suit, jumping off a cliff edge thousands of feet up and flying terrifyingly close to some of the worlds most dangerous mountain faces before deploying a parachute at the very last second. Its the closest man has ever come to the age old dream of flight but it is fraught with danger. Impact is fatal.

Among the proximity wingsuit flying community, one man has become notorious. Jeb Corliss has a self-confessed death wish. As a young boy he was diagnosed with counterphobia: a pathological desire to confront fear. As someone who used to suffer from suicidal tendencies, Jeb found that the thrill he gets from leaping from the worlds highest buildings and mountains was the only way to free himself from his depressive moods. Through death I found my life.

This extraordinary and visually stunning film follows Jeb on his quest to fly within 5 feet, down the side of the worlds most dangerous mountains the Matterhorn in Switzerland. But his journey is far from straightforward. Arrested for attempting to BASE jump the Empire State Building, Jeb could be facing a year in prison

Daredevil Jeb Corliss

From came this short item on daredevil Jeb Corliss.

Note: Sadly unavailable in some countries/regions.

A brand new series of visually stunning films which asks what compels some people to risk their lives and push themselves to the physical and mental limits of human capability.

Each film follows one Daredevil in a quest to fulfil a personal dream: to cross one of the world’s highest canyons, hundreds of feet above the ground on an inch-wide rope without a safety harness; to run a marathon 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, barefooted and wearing only a pair of shorts; to fly down the face of the Matterhorn in a winged Teflon suit only ten feet away from the surface; and to take a home-made flying car on an odyssey from London to Timbuktu, driving across Europe and flying across sea and desert.

The extraordinary scenes of bravery and athleticism prompt the question: why do these characters push themselves further than anyone else on the planet.

Divorce, arrests, wealth, crashes, fame and frostbite – the personal stories of the Daredevils are as intense as the activities that they endanger their lives for.

Daredevils - The Human Bird

The first film, The Human Bird , follows daredevil Jeb Corliss as he aims to fly down the Matterhorn in Switzerland in a winged suit, within five feet of the jagged cliff face.

Proximity-wingsuit flying involves donning a state-of-the-art winged suit, jumping out of a helicopter or off a cliff side thousands of feet up, and flying terrifyingly close to some of the world's most dangerous mountain faces, before pulling a parachute at the very last minute. It is the closest man has ever got to realising the dream of flight; and it is extremely dangerous. Jeb Corliss has a self-confessed death wish. As a young boy he was diagnosed with counterphobia: 'a pathological desire to confront fear'.

Jeb, who always wears black, has found that the thrill he gets from leaping from the world's highest buildings and mountains is the only way to free himself from his dark moods and suicidal tendencies: 'Through death, I found my life.' But his Matterhorn dare proves far from straightforward. Arrested for attempting to base-jump off the Empire State Building, Jeb could be facing a year in prison.

Saturday, September 12, 2009 - competition day 1 and 2

11 Sept 2009, 17:25 - Terni Italy
by Jarno Cordia

Friday started early, with everyone showing up at 9:00 in the morning for the first stretching (yes! people where actually observed doing things that make this look like sport). The first load went up at 9:15, with jumpers ready to go head to head for round one, two and so on.
The French showed some amazing flying from the first jump. Smooth controlled flying, barely visable inputs, and smooth docks.
The TonySuits factory team is also doing well. Activly flying for the docks, but making them just a tad slower than the French and Dutch teams.

Most of the Italian teams start their competition jumps on saterday. So their scores will be appearing on within the next few hours.
Several teams have already finished the competition, and its just waiting for Chief judge James Boole to upload the final figures.

So far the flying has been more than impressive on all teams, and the event video will definately be worth watching. Especialy the 5th (free) round has many people exited, and experimenting heavily with funky flying moves.

More news soon!

A more detailed breakdown of the scores:

FlyLikeBrick - Round 1

10 Sept 2009, 23:55 - Terni Italy
by Jarno Cordia
After a long drive, and starting the day by leaving the keys in the car after closing it (sorry about breaking your window Alex!) the different teams started dripping in.
Around 15:00 the pilot arrived, and the Caravan was fired up. The Italian team (actually 'a' Italian team, as we will have 4 local teams!) and team USA (TonySuits) and team Holland (FlyLikeBrick) got a few practice jumps in.
Just before the last load, team France (Les Pinguins) arrived, and they also tried a last training round, before all the competition mayhem unfolds tomorrow morning!

Though 3 of the Italian teams wont arrive till saterday morning, the teams currently at the DZ will start the competition on load 1 this friday.

As mentioned before, the scores will be updated/added live on

Points for each round will be awared as follows:

Docks + Flying-style (1>10 score) + camerawork (1>10 score) = Round total

Expect another update tomorrow!

The video updates will be a tad slower these following 2 to 3 days, but you will get frequent competition updates in return! And of course, a big 'catching up' video-update as soon as the competition finishes!

Cheers from Italy,

Eli Thompson 1973 - 2009

Sad news went through the community the past weekend.

Eli Thompson sadly is no longer among us, as he suffered fatal injuries due to an accident that occurred while working on a special wingsuit BASE shoot for a new 3D movie with the RedBull AirForce.

Eli Thompson is concidered one of the grandfathers of freefly, who helped push the sport and dicipline to the great heights it has reached today.
He was also a host and stuntman for many movies and TV shows and subject of several documantary videos/DVDs.

From the RedBull Airforce website:
It absolutely devastates us to have to write that earlier today in Lautterbrunnen, Switzerland, our brother Eli passed away. Words will never be able to sum up any person’s life and the effect that they had on the world. This is especially true when speaking of Eli.

The smallest guy on the team had the biggest presence in any room or any airplane. Eli’s story is one of love and innovation. He fell in love with flying at the age of 19. From his first jump he was hooked. It was that love that pushed him to innovate in the sport. As one of the pioneers of freeflying he changed the perception of what it meant to be a skydiver. His ideas and his vision made him part of skydiving history and earned him multiple World Championships and World Records.
Most impressive was his love and dedication to his family. There is no doubt that his wife and two beautiful daughters were his first priority. You could see the smile on his face, over the phone, when he announced that he and Sarah were expecting a little boy. His eyes would light up whenever they were around or whenever he could brag about them. Eli was a textbook example of a loving husband and a perfect father.
His love for life was infectious making each minute pure magic. Eli’s passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts and our lives. He was and always will be the man. Thank you for all the good times man. We love you.

A special memorial website has been created for Eli, to help raise funds for Eli’s family.

World Base Race 2009 Qualification Run

neil amonson posted a new video on Vimeo.
My qualification run during the World Base Race in Norway. The actual competition started the next day. This jump was to get a time from each jumper so everyone would be properly seeded during the real races. As you can see, weather was an issue and many jumpers ended up getting rained on in all their gear, during free fall, and while landing. Although, the fog does make for a nice effect while flying, don't you think ;-)

After 4 rounds, I ended up in 4th place from an international field of 35 competitors, also making me the "Fastest Flying American". Hell yea!
