FlyLikeBrick - Wingsuit Instruction videos (free)

Posting about some of our own work for a change (copied from
Its blue skies and warm weather here in Holland, so no better time to sit down in front of a computer and doing some work..

We've been busy updating the FlyLikeBrick Flight manuals to HD for our website and are now hosting them via our (pro) account on Vimeo.

You can now embed the videos where-ever you like, or view them on our website or on the new Wingsuit Instruction channel on Vimeo.

Im currently editing several new Flight Manuals, the next one is sceduled to be on body position at pulltime.
Other subjects we're planning on covering are flatspin and instability recovery (with example footage), high speed exits from tailgate aircraft, advanced backflying and more.

If you have requests, or think you can assist with some nice example footage for the topics currently planned...give a shout via email or PM.

Video: Geoffrey Robson remembered

A new YouTube showed up, highlighting one of the jumps Geoffrey made before the fatal jump that cost him his life.
A clear view on the jump attempted is presented in the video.

You can find the YouTube video here

Geoffrey Robson flying a new route from the Groot Drakenstein mountains above Boschendal, near Stellenbosch, South Africa.

The video was recorded on his helmet-mounted video camera.

One week later he tried the same route, but tried to cross the ridge between Devil's Tooth (the peak to the front, right) and the mountain. His calculations were wrong, and he failed to clear the ridge, resulting in his death at the age of 31.

Geoffrey completed his Master's degree at the University of Stellenbosch, and was a PhD student at the ETH in Switzerland, where he conducted research on wingsuit flying.

Here is a recent talk where he describes his research and here and here are two newspaper articles on his impressive life and tragic death

Wingsuit B.A.S.E. malfunction

A scary hardpull/(almost)no-pull incident video, resulting in a low opening and (luckely) un-eventful landing.

Description from the video credits:
What happened?
The handle of the pilot-chute disappeared inside the legpouch.
Don't know what exactly caused this, but it was defenitly in position on the exit.

Lesson learned... Always make sure that your PC fills out the legpouch so tight, that there is no space for the handle to dissappear.

Dean Potter freeclimbs and jumps the Eiger

Though not strictly about wingsuiting, it is a nice article about someone who frequently flies in a wingsuit from all sorts of objects. Dean Potter is featured in UK's Daily Mail in a story about him freeclimbing Switserland's Eiger and then jumping off of it using a specially designed lightweight rig & chute.

I find it interesting that he describes having the chute as a kind of backup in case he falls during the climb. I'm having a hard time imagining having a nice stable opening if that were to happen, but I guess it's better than nothing. :)

We've featured Dean Potter before.

Canopy sucked into wingsuit burble

Here is what happens when combining an 88 sq ft canopy with a large wingsuit. This is one of those videos that will provide an invaluable learning lesson for a long time.

Check out Alex' footage of an entire canopy being sucked into the burble at pull time.

Main canopy sucked into burble of wingsuit from Alx72 on Vimeo.
Jump with very large wingsuit and small high performance canopy (non crossbraced) with short line trim.
Pilot chute pulls canopy out of the bag, pilot chute collapses.
Canopy then gets sucked into the burble of the wingsuit and does not catch air, bounces around on the back of the pilot. Pilot makes body movements, canopy catches air and inflates properly. Landing without any issues. Pilot is a very experienced skydiver, wingsuit flier and base jumper.

Many questions come to mind when watching this.
  • How well does a main canopy open after dancing around inside a burble for a while?
  • How much does line length influence the opening?
  • Could cutting away leave you with a canopy lingering inside the burble?
  • How well will the reserve open, if of similar small size?
  • And how much altitude will be lost in the process?
Just a few things worth pondering.
Enjoy the video, and keep it in mind when you consider your canopy choice for wingsuit jumps.

For additional discussion on the topic, also check out the related thread.

High Altitude Wingsuit Jumps - The Records

Wingsuit Records
There have been quite a few distance and time records set in wingsuit flying over the past few years. We here at WWWN figured we would list all record (official and un-official) up to this point, and we will work on keeping this list as up to date as possible. If you have (be it by data, video, or media) verified additions or corrections, shoot us an email.

The jump objective for these jumps often varied from furthest distance flown, to longest freefall time or both.
Pull altitude isnt known for most jumps, but on record attempts (official and un-official) should always be above legal pull altutude of 2500 ft.
And (recommended and most likely) a bit higher to calculate for the effects of fatigue and additional gear used for high altitude loads.

NOTE: Not all attempts have been varified officialy (either by official organisation/Guiness judge checking for validity and/or presenting GPS/Altimeter data/video).

Ben Borger sets distance record for wingsuit flight

WWWN reader gkdave pointed us to the Army Golden Knights' official webpage, which has an update on Ben Borgers record flight:

Everything went as planned while in flight, and SSG Borger exited the C-17 at 0749 and landed safely at approximately 0756. He traveled a total of 11.5 miles and now holds the world record for greatest distance traveled while in freefall. SSG Borger was in freefall for 6 minutes 35 seconds, just short of the current world record of 6:48.

Congrats Ben, that's a lot of miles covered!

Wingsuit Flock Briefing Tool released

Fly Like Brick has been helping Tom van Dijck develop a wingsuit formation briefing/debriefing tool for the wingsuit community.

Please read the first post in this thread on for all the info, and if you have any suggestions, please add them to the thread. Your input is very valuable in making this a great tool for the entire community.

Be aware that this is still a BETA version and some things might not work as expected. While only supporting the Windows platform at the moment, we're working on expanding to all operating systems, as well as the web! For the time being, Mac and Linux users can try running the Windows-based version using Mono.

It's back and then jumps to the first stones for most of us this year. I speak good breaks stones and not without some jumps sliders down made during the winter. Looks like this year we did a lot this winter break.

Mount Brento in Italy is the perfect place to start learning to his departure negative, the height of verticality and its field of operation. This place well known of small word of basejumpers is the ideal place to grow in wingsuit in good conditions. It seems we've all gotten to the goal we set ourselves.

Mount Brento is a difficult place with regard to weather and upper air, always a gamble as displacement. Last year at this same period there was still much snow on the path to the exit. This year we have been very lucky and we could jump all day and the wind was rarely an obstacle.

The patrol of good days ahead, strongly future flights ...
